Patra City
Patras is the capital of the prefecture of Achaia and the third largest city of Greece and the largest in the Peloponnese. It is also the largest and most central port to Italy and the Ionian islands of Kefalonia, Ithaka, Corfu, Lefkas and Paxi. The new modern port of Patras is available to the traveling public since July 2011.
In a city that over time has received influences from various cultures (mainly occupied by the Franks, the Venetians and Turks) the result of the effect of the above is obvious.
Patras is divided into 2 areas:
The upper town at the foot of the castle is the old town and has several neo-classical buildings.
The down town contains many old mansions, the Odeon, cafes, restaurants and rich business commercial center. The castle itself has now turned into a park and offers wonderful views across the city and the Ionian Sea.
During Carnival period, the city is famous for crazy celebrations with a lot of costumes and parties in the streets.
Also, the city retains a perfect museum, an art gallery and municipal theater.
Noteworthy is the square of Psila Alonia with several cafes, restaurants, palm trees, benches and playground. It is quite a popular place where locals spend their days and evenings.
Usually the city is used as a middle station by travelers and is a transportation hub connecting Athens with areas of Central Greece, Epirus, with neighboring countries such as Albania through the Bridge, the western Peloponnese, but also by sea using the new port, is connecting Ionian islands and Italy.
